THE JEWEL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

A city with an imperial past, open to the sea, commercial and gastronomic, but above all, a city with a fascinating and little-known history — that is Tarragona.
Its ruins transport us to the Roman Empire, when Tarraco was a key hub, even becoming the residence of Emperor Augustus, who ruled the empire for the first time from outside Rome. A simple walk through the Pont del Diable aqueduct, the Circus or the Amphitheatre is enough to understand the scale the city once reached. Perhaps that is why it boasts one of the most important archaeological museums in Catalonia.
But its past is not only imperial; Tarragona is full of stories from different periods, as reflected in its architecture, where Roman, medieval, modern and modernist elements coexist — a legacy that earned it designation as a UNESCO World Heritage City.
Moreover, if you want to experience history firsthand, there are various historical reenactment activities, including the Tarraco Viva festival held in May, as well as performances during the summer season.
Must-see places:
• Cathedral: dating from the 12th–14th centuries, located in the highest part of the city, giving its name to the old town known as the Upper Part.
• Roman Tarraco Model: a miniature reconstruction of the city in the 2nd century.
• Roman Amphitheatre: where gladiator fights were held, in a privileged seaside location.
• Praetorium and Roman Circus: a Roman tower from the Provincial Forum, later converted into a royal residence. The Circus hosted chariot and horse races.
• Mediterranean Balcony: at the end of Rambla Nova, offering stunning views.
• Plaça de la Font, Fòrum and Rei: squares full of restaurants, cafés and terraces.
• Serrallo District: the fishermen’s quarter, where the daily fish auction takes place in the afternoon.
• Beaches: fine golden sand, शांत and clean.
• Rambla Nova: the city’s main avenue, full of shops and life.
• Central Market: a beautiful modernist building, recently renovated, where you can buy and taste local products.
A city with a privileged location, rich in history and offering a wide and diverse cultural, gastronomic and commercial scene. Discover it!
