THE LANDSCAPE OF THE GENIUSES

The province of Tarragona is a place with a rich history, a land where great geniuses were born or resided; artists, painters, architects, musicians, writers, etc. They all created works inspired by the landscapes of the Costa Daurada or their experiences in the Tarragonese lands. This is why the tourist, cultural, and gastronomic proposal “The Landscape of the Geniuses” has been created, based on the essence of the landscapes that inspired Antoni Gaudí, Joan Miró, Pau Casals, and Pablo Picasso. Each of these geniuses is linked to a municipality in the province:
- Antoni Gaudí was born and raised between Riudoms and Reus. Through his relationship with nature, he created a modernism based on geometry and volumes, giving prominence to ceramics and becoming the most representative figure of Catalan Modernism.
- Joan Miró spent long periods at the family estate (Mas) in Mont-Roig del Camp, which was his retreat and the starting point of his career. The life in the countryside, the landscapes, and the Mediterranean Sea were his inspiration.
- Pau Casals was born in El Vendrell, and was one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. This cellist has been recognized as one of the most talented conductors and performers in history. Despite traveling with his tours around the world, El Vendrell and his house on Playa de San Salvador remained very present throughout his life.
- Pablo Picasso is the only one of these artists who was not born in Tarragona. His connection with this land comes from the time he spent in Horta de Sant Joan, a village in the Terra Alta region. His first isolation in this municipality was a creative explosion, which is why it is said that he arrived as Pablo Ruiz and left as Picasso.
